How do manual car windows work

How Manual Windows Work Anyone remember those old school manual crank windows? Well they still exist on some economy cars. I took one apart to see just how it works. Manual crank windows are a cheaper and simpler alternative to powered windows. They work best on small cars, where the driver can actually reach around to all four doors and crank up each window in case his passengers forget to wind it up.

So instead of taking the regulator out of the door, I take the door skin off the door to demonstrate how it works in motion: Essentially its a 4 bar mechanism, that works with a giant pivot sun gear turned by the crank and two sliders at the top and bottom ends. Here's the regulator removed from the vehicle. Can you convert manual windows to power windows?

Manual windows can be turned into power windows, but it does require quite a bit of work. From wiring to additional in-door mechanisms, there are many components that have to be added to take windows from crank-powered to motor-powered. How much does it cost to add power windows to a car? When did cars get power windows? Power windows were first introduced on luxury models in the s. Do power windows work when the car is off? You do need power in order to operate power windows. Your car either needs to be running or you need to turn the car's power on usually called "accessories" mode.

Nature or manual windows are more straightforward compared to power windows. These are; the faulty regulator and the stripped crank gears. Sometimes you may even push the window to its correct position, but the actions continue to worsen the status. Besides, you can even break the car window regulator.

Check everything visually. Use this detailed guide to have the issue fixed:. Try to rotate the window handle while paying much attention to notice how it behaves. If it turns freely or feels like grinding, then its teeth might be defective. They might be stripped in the crank. On such occasions, you are supposed to take out the crank and diagnose defects visually.

If the teeth are stripped in the crank, the best and permanent solution is to replace the whole door handle. Replacing the crank is simple, but you need to ensure the new one is compatible with the existing door handle. Else, you may end up fixing the wrong handle that will start to behave strangely sooner than expected. The first thing to do is to unscrew the door panel so that you access internal parts of the window. You need to grab all the available screws that are located at the back of the door handle.

Try to separate the plastic rivets, but with a lot of care. Lift out the mechanism through the access aperture. Before fitting the new mechanism, grease the pivot and sliding bearings , and the gear teeth on the regulator.

Lightly smear the whole mechanism with petroleum jelly which will act as a protection against rust. To refit the new assembly, which includes the regulator and sliding arm, follow the removal procedure in reverse. Retape the polythene sheet in position. Test the mechanism before refitting the door panel and trim.

The cable may slacken after long use, causing play in the winder mechanism as the handle changes direction between up and down. Adjusting a pulley to take up the slack in the cable will correct the fault. Take off the door fittings and trimmings and the inner door panel, including the polythene condensation-barrier sheet See Removing a door trim panel. Check the condition of the cable; even if it is only slightly frayed, it must be renewed. If not frayed, it can be adjusted.

Look for the adjustable pulley, which slides sideways on a mounting in the door frame to alter the cable tension. Loosen the pulley mounting and move it to take up the slack in the cable. Retighten the mounting and check that the winder action is smooth. If necessary, readjust the pulley until it is. Take care not to over-adjust, which will strain the cable and regulator. If the cable is broken or frayed and needs renewing, you will probably have to buy it as part of a complete assembly with a new regulator.

There are different assemblies for right-hand doors and left-hand doors.
